Northern Michigan University Provost Kerri Schuiling and her Tennessee-based colleague Francie Likis, both nurse practitioners and midwives, recently published the 4th edition of Gynecologic Health Care: With an Introduction to Prenatal and Postpartum Care. The award-winning text is billed as “the gold standard in evidence-based” care and advocates a holistic, person-centered approach. NMU nursing professors also contributed content to the updated edition.

Northern Michigan University English professor and visual artist Russell Prather is showcasing his work in a solo installation-style exhibition titled “Layers and Light” at the Muskegon Museum of Art (MMA). As the recipient of NMU's 2020 Peter White Scholar Award, Prather received funding to create new works, participate in three solo and three group exhibitions—MMA included—and complete a two-month artist's residency. 

The next presentation in the Your Health Lecture Series will be titled “Immunizations and Respiratory Infections: Pertussis, Influenza and COVID-19.” This free community webinar will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14. Dr. Keith English of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine will present the information.

Emma Drever, president of Northern Michigan University's student government organization (ASNMU), is quoted in an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education titled "How to Get Students to Vote in a Pandemic? Get Creative." 

Northern Michigan University's first official Indigenous Peoples' Day celebration will be held Monday, Oct. 12. Hosted by the Native American Student Association (NASA), the holiday recognizes the past and current state of colonization for Indigenous peoples.

The Two Books, Two Communities project presents a reading and Q&A session with The WOmen of the Copper Country author Mary Doria Russell at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. The event will be virtual and will be streamed live from the Beaumier Center's Facebook page, www.facebook.com/BeaumierNMU. It is free and open to the public, and there is no need to register. The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU, Munising Public Library and Peter White Public Library are co-sponsoring the event.

The Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives is celebrating National Archives Month this October. It will participate in Ask an Archivist Day Wednesday, Oct. 7. University Archivist Marcus Robyns will be responding to questions throughout the day about NMU and U.P. history, the archives' collections and more.

WNMU-TV 13, the PBS station at Northern Michigan University, is now offering a live stream of its programming. Shows can be viewed as they air from any device at no additional cost. 

Northcross Group (NCG) has announced an academic partnership with Northern Michigan University (NMU). The partnership will help to develop cybersecurity skills in the next generation of cyber professionals by instilling NCG's business centric and system risk management approach to security through internship opportunities and contributions to NMU's cybersecurity  initiatives, including academic programs and the Upper Peninsula Cybersecurity Institute. 

A Northern Michigan University fisheries management class spent Friday afternoon wading with nets in Whetstone Brook near Founders Landing in Marquette. With the guidance of NMU graduate student Chase Daiek, they were learning equipment operation and safety associated with electrofishing, a common sampling technique used for surveying small streams.
