Woodworkers Inspired at Anderson Ranch

NMU Senior Tim Kruger has long been interested in woodworking, particularly furniture design. But “an epiphany” during a woodturning class led by Professor Jason Schneider convinced him to hone in on his true passion: teaching. Kruger was inspired to apply for a summer workshop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colo., and received a scholarship to attend. Schneider also returned to “the Ranch,” where he had worked for a decade before joining NMU’s faculty, to teach two summer workshops.

Author Nicole Walker to Give Reading at NMU

The English department at Northern Michigan University will kick off its annual Visiting Writers Series with a reading by notable essayist and author Nicole Walker from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20. The reading will be in Jamrich Hall 1318 and is open to the public. The event is the first of several that will take place on campus throughout the 2018-19 academic year.  

NMU Expands Homecoming Activities

Northern Michigan University's 2018 Homecoming celebration will feature a full slate of activities for alumni and community members Sept. 18-22. Three special additions this year include a community-wide ice cream social, the unveiling and dedication of a new Wildcat statue on campus and the premiere of a documentary on the 1975 national champion football team. The following events are free, unless otherwise indicated.

Berens Brings 'Manitowoc Minute' to NMU

Comedian Charlie Berens, the camouflage-clad host of the popular “Manitowoc Minute” online video series, will bring a live version of the show to Northern Michigan University. The Wisconsin native will discuss local headlines, da Packers and all things Midwestern during the Marquette stop of his “Oh My Gosh Tour.” His show begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in Forest Roberts Theatre. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for students and $5 for NMU students.

Police Academy Holds Graduation

Aug. 30, 2018 —
Northern Michigan University’s Regional Police Academy recently held its graduation ceremony. Fourteen recruits were given certificates of completion after 16 weeks of training that revolves around a curriculum set forth by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Construction Management Featured in Magazine

NMU's construction management program is featured in a University Businessmagazine article titled "Campus construction instruction: Turning campus building sites into student learning labs." NMU students worked on The Woods housing complex. They participated in site tours and meetings and reviewed blueprints and other project documents. Alumna Recounts Value of NMU Experience

NMU alumna Tiffany Kleiman (’15 BS) will embark this fall on a doctoral program in criminal justice with a concentration in behavioral science at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She recently recounted the value of her undergraduate experience and thanked faculty and staff who made “an imprint” on her life in an email to President Fritz Erickson and Provost Kerri Schuiling.

NMU Student-Veteran Places Second IN National Arts Competition

Traci Dietz, a Northern Michigan University student-veteran from Negaunee, won second place in the photography category of the 2018 National Veterans Creative Arts Competition. The senior photography major entered a local competition through the Iron Mountain VA Medical Center. Her first-place finish qualified her for the national judging process. Dietz’s winning submission is an image titled “broken.”

Grads Receieve Nat Geo Grant for St. John Study

Two recent NMU alumni—Collin Richter ('17 BS) and Samantha DiGiulio ('16 BS)—received a National Geographic Society Early Careers Grant for a joint study on how last year’s hurricanes impacted reptiles and amphibians on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Their June project was a follow-up to independent research they completed as NMU students at the same location during an advanced field marine biology course led by Professor Jill Leonard.
