Former Verizon VP Talks Shift to Startup Founder

Feb. 5, 2020 —
Martin Heikel, a former Verizon vice president and founder/CEO of Flatiron Apps Company in New York City, will discuss his professional journey from corporate executive to startup founder during a free public presentation at Northern Michigan University. He will draw upon his career after graduating from NMU to address lessons learned along the way and factors that contribute to business success. 

Alumnus Publishes Motivating Children's Book

Six years ago, NMU alumnus Mylan Murphy posted a photo caption on Facebook that stated “It Only Takes 1”—as in one person, place, thing or opportunity to change someone's life. That is the guiding principle that has propelled him to personal and professional success in the face of challenges since he was a teenager. Now it is also the title of his first self-published children's book.

NMU Winter Enrollment Increases

Jan. 28, 2020 —
Northern Michigan University's 10th day enrollment report for the current winter semester shows the overall headcount is 7,077, a 3% increase over winter 2019.  The university's total population served has increased 19% to 15,683, fueled in large part by 61% growth in users of NMU's Educational Access Network since this same time a year ago.

#RiseU.P. Women's Reception Saturday

NMU's Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) will host a Rise U.P. Women's March 2020 post-reception Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Ore Dock Brewing Company. The event will feature all-female speakers and musicians, along with a pop-up art show by female artists. PRSSA is highlighting several empowering NMU students, faculty and staff in advance of the march and reception. This is the last of four installments recognizing their dedication.

Opposing NFL Coaches Have NMU Ties

Two NFL coaches with Northern Michigan University ties will face off in Sunday's NFC championship game. Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur, who calls the offensive plays executed by Aaron Rodgers, served as NMU's quarterback coach early in his career (2006). San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, one of the league's prime head coaching candidates, was an all-conference tight end as a Wildcat (1998-2002) and graduated from NMU with a bachelor's degree.
