Northern Michigan University will debut a new mobile video production system at this weekend's Wildcat hockey series. The system will enhance the viewing experience for fans in the arena and viewers streaming the game remotely. It will also give NMU students on the video crew experience working with professional-grade equipment.

Six years ago, NMU alumnus Mylan Murphy posted a photo caption on Facebook that stated “It Only Takes 1”—as in one person, place, thing or opportunity to change someone's life. That is the guiding principle that has propelled him to personal and professional success in the face of challenges since he was a teenager. Now it is also the title of his first self-published children's book.

Northern Michigan University's 10th day enrollment report for the current winter semester shows the overall headcount is 7,077, a 3% increase over winter 2019.  The university's total population served has increased 19% to 15,683, fueled in large part by 61% growth in users of NMU's Educational Access Network since this same time a year ago.

Steve Mitchell of West Bloomfield, a 1967 Northern Michigan University graduate and a 1963 graduate of Ishpeming High School, was elected by his fellow board members to serve as chair of the NMU Board of Trustees for 2020. He will be joined by Tami Seavoy of Marquette as vice chair. 

Northern Michigan University is offering students a 24/7 study area for the entire winter semester in the lower level of Harden Hall.

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will present “Brain Functions: Exercise for a Healthy Mind,” a program about how the brain works and how to keep it healthy with age. The event will be held from 6-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, in the community room of Peter White Public Library. 

Northern Michigan University students are invited to submit applications for more than 300 NMU donor-funded scholarships from Monday, Jan. 27 through Monday, Feb. 17.

Northern Michigan University will host an evening with musher Jeff King, four-time champion of the 1,049-mile Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. His presentation begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, in John X. Jamrich Hall room 1100. It is free for NMU students with ID and $2 for the general public.

NMU's Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) will host a Rise U.P. Women's March 2020 post-reception Saturday, Jan. 18, at the Ore Dock Brewing Company. The event will feature all-female speakers and musicians, along with a pop-up art show by female artists. PRSSA is highlighting several empowering NMU students, faculty and staff in advance of the march and reception. This is the last of four installments recognizing their dedication.

Northern Michigan University's weekly shopping shuttle that transports students from campus to Meijer, Walmart and Target will resume Friday, Jan. 17.
