Design thinking is a creative, human-centered process for solving problems, enhancing innovation and improving outcomes. NMU's campus-wide approach to design thinking is unique, according to the executive director of the da Vinci Center at Virginia Commonwealth University.

As part of a 40th anniversary NMU men's rugby reunion, former and current players joined in honoring an alumnus who is confronting ALS.

The 2019 McNair Fall Symposium will be held from 12:15 - 4:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, in Mead Auditorium in the West Science Building.

NMU alumna and freelance food and drink writer Layla Khoury-Hanold ('04 BS) focuses on Marquette in a piece for the Chicago Tribune. She writes that the outdoor splendor, recreational activities and vibrant downtown have turned the city into a "bona fide tourist destination," as reflected by a new crop of food and beverage producers, several of whom are NMU alumni. An exhibition that symbolizes the story of millions of refugees worldwide will open Friday, Aug. 30, at Northern Michigan University's DeVos Art Museum. Israeli artist Orna Ben-Ami will give a talk at 6 p.m. An opening reception for her "Entire Life in a Package" exhibit will follow from 7-9 p.m. 

Northern Michigan University's automotive service technology program has renewed its accreditation to the master automotive service technician (MAST) level through the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Education Foundation. The program was ranked 10th nationwide earlier this year by bestschools.org.

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will present “Malaysia by Train, Bus and Boat." Sandi Poindexter will discuss her solo travels through the country from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, in room B101 of the Superior Dome.

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will host a Woodworking Rally from 8 a.m. to noon on six consecutive Mondays, beginning Sept. 9 and ending Oct. 14. The sessions will be held in room 137 of Northern Michigan University's Jacobetti Center.

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning is partnering with Essentials Massage and Yoga Studio to present a five-session chair yoga program. Sessions will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Tuesdays Sept. 10, 17, 24 and Oct. 1 and 8. The location is 708 Chippewa Square, Suite 10 in Marquette.

Applying her years of experience in musical theater and dance, along with her participation in the Disney College Program, Northern Michigan University alumna Maddie Rayner ('19 BS) now works as a character performer at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

NMU's president, Dr. Fritz Erickson, kicked off the new academic year by addressing faculty and staff at the 2019 Fall Convocation.

NMU alumnus Mark Ruoff ('97 BA) is featured in a media story on a German restaurant, Mountain Brauhaus, which three generations of his family have owned and operated since 1955 in Gardiner, N.Y.

A Northern Michigan University student spent his summer teaching English at an accredited Mongolian military university. Through the Cadet Coalition Warfighter Program (CCWP), senior political science major and NMU ROTC member Hunter Wernholm had the opportunity to teach English classes to military officers at National Defense University in Ulaanbaatar.

NMU alumnus Matt Nord ('07 BS) is the new manager of commercial lending at Embers Credit Union, which is based in Marquette and has five U.P. locations.

Northern Michigan University President Fritz Erickson will deliver his fall convocation to faculty, staff and students on Wednesday, Aug. 21, in Jamrich Hall 1100. 

Tickets are available for Northern Michigan University's alumni awards brunch, scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, in the Northern Center. The five NMU alumni who will be honored over Homecoming weekend and their awards are: Joseph Evans of Marquette ('81 BS, '83 MA) and Kristine Poole of Santa Fe, N.M. ('92 BFA), Distinguished Alumni; Tom Fish of Wilmington, N.C. ('69 BS), Alumni Achievement; Jon Mommaerts of Marquette ('91 BS), Alumni Service; and Nicole Weber of Washington, D.C. ('09 BA), Outstanding Young Alumni.

Representatives of the Consulate-General of Japan in Detroit visited NMU Aug. 13 while in Marquette to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its Sister City relationship with Higashiomi.

In The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplin portrayed both a caricature of Adolf Hitler and a Jewish barber, using his first sound picture to make a boldly satirical political statement on anti-Semitism. NMU English major Eric Pitz is exploring the film's cultural significance as the recipient of a $5,000 Anna and Rich Lundin Honors Summer Research Fellowship.

NMU School of Health and Human Performance professors Randy Jensen and Sarah Breen, along with students from the sports and exercise science programs, gave seven presentations at the recent International Conference on Biomechanics in Sports in Oxford, Ohio. The total made NMU the second-most productive university in the world at the event.
