NMU recently celebrated its first-ever Employee Appreciation Month. Events included the appreciation day kickoff, a retirees breakfast and the annual Faculty and Staff Recognition Celebration, where awards for excellence in service, innovation and distinguished team were presented.

Northern Michigan University's Forest Roberts Theatre has launched its first summer season, which includes the musical Mama Mia!, opening June 20. FRT also has announced the following lineup of performances and special events for the 2019-2020 academic year: 

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will offer a “Traverse City Tour: Villages, Wine and Lavender” from Sunday, July 28-Tuesday, July 30. The registration deadline is July 15.

Philadelphia professional boxer and NMU alumnus "The New" Ray Robinson ('05 VOC) will face Josh Kelly June 1 for the WBA international welterweight title.

Northern Michigan University was the most popular choice on Academic Signing Day at Marquette Senior High School. Of the 155 seniors who participated, 91 indicated that they plan to attend NMU in the fall.

The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center proudly announces the Upper Peninsula Folklife Awardees for 2019. Each year since 2009, the Beaumier Center has presented this award to individuals or groups who have made a difference in the creating or preserving the folk traditions of the Upper Peninsula.

Northern Michigan University will offer free public tours of the Phase I renovation of The Northern Center, formerly the University Center. They are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 21. Participants will see the Grand Ballroom and associated integrated technology, including pull-down screens and the projector, along with the new bookstore, pre-function space, service corridor and restrooms.

NMU alumna Raven Mitchell ('18 BS) is featured in a magazine cover story that highlights individuals who have “devoted their lives to better understanding the physical world so the rest of us might learn how to protect it.” In conjunction with her master's thesis project, Mitchell is working with NMU alumnus Frederick “Fritz” Nelson ('73 BS) to monitor the changing thickness of permafrost in Arctic regions. Todd Rose, a senior communication studies major at Northern Michigan University and Escanaba High School graduate, has been selected as the first recipient of the Dr. Charles F. Ganzert Memorial Fund. The new fund is awarded to a deserving NMU student in honor of Ganzert, who taught broadcasting classes for 23 years before dying suddenly in the spring of 2016. 

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees today approved four new academic programs. Those that will begin with the fall 2019 semester are: certificate in applied workplace leadership; certificate in hospitality and tourism management; bachelor's in social media design management; and master's in mathematics. A master's degree in speech-language pathology will be introduced in summer 2021.

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees presented its annual Student Achievement Awards. Recipients were: Hailey Donohue of Marquette, Outstanding Female Graduating Senior; Michael Stamm of Almont, Mich., Outstanding Male Graduating Senior; Ryan Watling of New London, Wis., Outstanding Student; Connor Loftus of Plainwell, Mich., Outstanding Nontraditional Student; and Kevin Store of Houghton, Outstanding Global Campus Student.

The initial phase of The Northern Center renovation is nearing completion. Furniture will be moved in early next week in advance of a May 9 luncheon, which will mark the first event held in the new ballroom space. A high school prom is planned the following week.

Northern Michigan University senior Kyle Flickinger will graduate on Saturday with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry. The Brimley native excelled academically, earning a summer research fellowship for his work with the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center, among other honors. But by supplementing STEM with diverse extracurricular activities ranging from athletics to music to theater, he is truly leaving NMU with a well-rounded education.

The Upper Peninsula Cybersecurity Institute at NMU was unveiled May 2 during a well-attended grand opening celebration in The Northern Center (formerly University Center). 

NMU will host a highly interactive Business After Hours open to the general public from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Harden Hall (formerly the Learning Resources Center). The event will demonstrate how technology is enhancing the facility's services and resources for both community and educational use. 

NMU's Student Leader Fellowship Program (SLFP) is expressing its appreciation for faculty and staff members who served as mentors over the past year. It also is recruiting new mentors for 2019-20. The following individuals acted as role models, providing guidance and support to Student Fellows as they strive to become leaders of their communities through service: 

The Marquette County Conservation District and Megan McConville, a Northern Michigan University professor who specializes in water chemistry, are seeking volunteers to help clean up trash and debris from Whetstone Brook and its surrounding banks. Crews will meet at Founders Landing, where the tributary spills into Lake Superior, at 10 a.m. and work until 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18. Prizes and lunch will be included. Volunteers should wear boots and gloves.

Northern Michigan University's Center for Teaching and Learning, along with the Extended Learning and Community Engagement division, held a recent open house celebration to honor outgoing and incoming scholars.

Registration for Career Exploration Summer Camps for grades 7-12 opens May 6. The camps will take place July 8-10 and July 17-19 and will be held at Northern Michigan University's Jacobetti Complex.
