NMU Employees, Teams Honored

NMU recently celebrated its first-ever Employee Appreciation Month. Events included the appreciation day kickoff, a retirees breakfast and the annual Faculty and Staff Recognition Celebration, where awards for excellence in service, innovation and distinguished team were presented.

NMU Offers Public Tours of Northern Center

May. 10, 2019 —
Northern Michigan University will offer free public tours of the Phase I renovation of The Northern Center, formerly the University Center. They are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 21. Participants will see the Grand Ballroom and associated integrated technology, including pull-down screens and the projector, along with the new bookstore, pre-function space, service corridor and restrooms.

Alumna is 'Fighting Fire with Science'

NMU Board Approves New Academic Programs

May. 3, 2019 —
The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees today approved four new academic programs. Those that will begin with the fall 2019 semester are: certificate in applied workplace leadership; certificate in hospitality and tourism management; bachelor's in social media design management; and master's in mathematics. A master's degree in speech-language pathology will be introduced in summer 2021.

NMU Board Presents Student Awards

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees presented its annual Student Achievement Awards. Recipients were: Hailey Donohue of Marquette, Outstanding Female Graduating Senior; Michael Stamm of Almont, Mich., Outstanding Male Graduating Senior; Ryan Watling of New London, Wis., Outstanding Student; Connor Loftus of Plainwell, Mich., Outstanding Nontraditional Student; and Kevin Store of Houghton, Outstanding Global Campus Student.

Flickinger Epitomizes Well-Rounded Education

May. 3, 2019 —
Northern Michigan University senior Kyle Flickinger will graduate on Saturday with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry. The Brimley native excelled academically, earning a summer research fellowship for his work with the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center, among other honors. But by supplementing STEM with diverse extracurricular activities ranging from athletics to music to theater, he is truly leaving NMU with a well-rounded education.

Whetstone Brook Cleanup May 18

Apr. 30, 2019 —
The Marquette County Conservation District and Megan McConville, a Northern Michigan University professor who specializes in water chemistry, are seeking volunteers to help clean up trash and debris from Whetstone Brook and its surrounding banks. Crews will meet at Founders Landing, where the tributary spills into Lake Superior, at 10 a.m. and work until 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18. Prizes and lunch will be included. Volunteers should wear boots and gloves.

The Northern Michigan University Board of Trustees will hold its next regularly scheduled meeting on Friday, May 3. Committee meetings are scheduled from 8:30-10:45 a.m. The formal/business session is scheduled from 11 a.m. to noon in 602 Cohodas Hall.
