Izzo Receives Basketball Award

Tom Izzo, a 1977 NMU grad, received the Metropolitan Award Sunday night for long and outstanding service to men's college basketball. The Michigan State University coach is one of only five in history to lead a team to the NCAA Final Four eight times or more. The Spartans won the NCAA championship in 2000. His longtime friend and fellow NMU alumnus Steve Mariucci presented the award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches to Izzo in Minneapolis, the site of this year's Final Four. Alumna Co-Authors Colon Cancer Screening Paper

An annual at-home stool test could be an effective alternative to a colonoscopy for patients at average risk of colon cancer, according to a paper co-authored by NMU alumna Rachel Gruber (BS '12) and published in Annals of Internal Medicine. Because these FIT tests are easy, non-invasive and inexpensive, adopting their use could improve lagging CRC screening rates. Gruber is a research coordinator with the Regenstrief Institute in Indianapolis. She was the “linchpin” for the complicated project, synthesizing medical literature four times the length of War and Peace. Read a feature story on her role here.
