NMU Earns Silver STARS Rating

Northern Michigan University's STARS rating, determined by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education as a measure of universities' performance related to sustainability, advanced to silver in 2020 from bronze three years ago. The rating system factors in academics and research, operations, administration/planning and engagement.

NMU Provost, Faculty Involved in 'Gynecologic Health Care' Update

Northern Michigan University Provost Kerri Schuiling and her Tennessee-based colleague Francie Likis, both nurse practitioners and midwives, recently published the 4th edition of Gynecologic Health Care: With an Introduction to Prenatal and Postpartum Care. The award-winning text is billed as “the gold standard in evidence-based” care and advocates a holistic, person-centered approach. NMU nursing professors also contributed content to the updated edition.

Muskegon Museum Exhibits Prather's Art

Northern Michigan University English professor and visual artist Russell Prather is showcasing his work in a solo installation-style exhibition titled “Layers and Light” at the Muskegon Museum of Art (MMA). As the recipient of NMU's 2020 Peter White Scholar Award, Prather received funding to create new works, participate in three solo and three group exhibitions—MMA included—and complete a two-month artist's residency.

Two Books Program Hosts Author's Talk

The Two Books, Two Communities project presents a reading and Q&A session with The WOmen of the Copper Country author Mary Doria Russell at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. The event will be virtual and will be streamed live from the Beaumier Center's Facebook page, www.facebook.com/BeaumierNMU. It is free and open to the public, and there is no need to register. The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at NMU, Munising Public Library and Peter White Public Library are co-sponsoring the event.

NCG Launches Academic Partnership with NMU

Northcross Group (NCG) has announced an academic partnership with Northern Michigan University (NMU). The partnership will help to develop cybersecurity skills in the next generation of cyber professionals by instilling NCG's business centric and system risk management approach to security through internship opportunities and contributions to NMU's cybersecurity  initiatives, including academic programs and the Upper Peninsula Cybersecurity Institute.

Toutant Honored with Alumni Service Award

Under Greg Toutant's leadership as CEO, Great Lakes Recovery Centers (GLRC) has expanded its scope and reach. In addition to its longtime role in addressing substance abuse, GLRC now provides a wide range of behavioral health treatment and prevention services throughout the Upper Peninsula. Toutant's role in that effort, combined with his active community involvement, have earned him Northern Michigan University's 2020 Alumni Service Award.

Utnegaard Receives Distinguished Alumni Award

Per Utnegaard left his hometown of Oslo, Norway, to attend Northern Michigan University on a Nordic skiing scholarship. His willingness to venture beyond his comfort zone at a young age stoked his fascination with other countries and cultures, and served as a springboard to his successful career as a global transport and logistics executive. It also inspires his solicited advice for current students as a recipient of NMU's Distinguished Alumni Award.

Rosenburg Receives NMU Young Alumni Award

Many college students change academic majors when they realize their first choice is not a good fit. Iron Mountain native Amanda Rosenburg took a handful of electives at Northern Michigan University to explore her Plan B options. It was a child development class offered by the psychology department that ignited her passion. Now Rosenburg works with Google to pioneer new ways to educate children in the digital age, which is especially timely and relevant in the context of COVID-19. The 2007 graduate is NMU's 2020 Outstanding Young Alumni Award recipient.
